You Win Some, You Lose Some

Dear Family,

Thanks for the wonderful letter! It is great to hear about all the goings on--man, it seems like the last Broadway Night was about a million years ago...missionary life does funny things to a person. It sounds like you are all doing great, however, which I am glad to hear.
Mom, so many questions! I will do my best. Usually when we meet people on the street, we do our best to get their phone number, and then we set up a time that we can meet them, usually at the Church building. It sometimes is tough to find times that work because most people have very involved work schedules, but we do our best to keep up on people. It is very helpful when people are honest about their desire to hear from us (or lack thereof), and don't make us play cat-and-mouse with them. There are a lot of Christians in our city (the majority of people identify themselves as "Pravoslav," or Orthodox), but most don't go to church (like in America). Shumen is a fairly small, quiet (which is funny, because "Shumen" literally means "loud") city compared with some other places missionaries are, so one doesn't run into too many people with out-there ideas. It is a nice little city. Hope that answered them, and good luck with the Half-Marathon--you guys can do it! I love you so much.
Dad, that is so wonderful that Jordan came to church! It is so true that we really have no idea how the Lord is preparing people to hear the Gospel, to change their minds and their hearts. It truly is His work--we just have to keep doing our best with diligence! I love you, and am so grateful for the example that you are to me in every way, the life that you lead that lights the path for mine.
Paige, you go, little sister. No sickness can stop you! I am sure you were absolutely stunning. I am glad to hear that you got far enough ahead to not have to worry about Finals. That's the way to do it, without a doubt. What did you write you paper on for Humanities? I am interested. I love you, and think you are one of a kind (because you are!). Keep it up!
Ronnie! I saw a picture of you hanging out with the "LDS Middle School Group"--you are a huge man! You are probably already taller than I am. Keep up the good work on stage, and on the court. Always remember that the many skills and talents that you have been blessed with work best when paired with humility and kindness--if you have those two, it makes all the other talents all the more worthwhile and meaningful, I promise. I think you are an awesome guy, and I love you.
Lizzie, keep on reading--it will do you good! I smile to myself when I think of you, curled up on in the reading nook or somewhere cozy, plowing through page after page after page. I love you with all my heart, and cannot think of you without smiling. Keep up being wonderful!
This week was a good one and a tough one--after getting so pumped up last week and champing at the bit to start achieving those high goals we set for ourselves, the Lord saw fit to give us a little bit of chastening. Appointment after appointment fell through, we couldn't make contact with our investigators to save our life, the weather turned rainy (turning all the people on the street back inside), Georgi slid backwards in his Word of Wisdom progression...needless to say, we felt like we fought uphill against the wind all week, just to survive. However, it is truly in the times of testing that you grow the most. It makes one rely more on the Lord, call to him more fervently in prayer, depend on his strength more, and recognize his miracles more fully. This morning, during personal study, I was reading in the Book of Mormon, and one verse stood out to me in a way that it never has before; in 3 Nephi 20:1, Jesus Christ commands his new disciples to stop praying, but to "not cease to pray in their heart," a sentiment oft repeated in the scriptures. However, as I pondered it, I started to realize the importance of that injunction, especially as a missionary. If we want to do the Lord's work correctly, we need to do it his way. If we want to do it his way, we need to know what that way is. If we want to know what that way is, what better way to find out than to ask? In every moment, we should be listening for how the Lord wants us to do his work, to bring his children home to him.
Dearest family, I want you to know that I know that this Gospel is worth it, that this church is true, that the Lord truly does have a plan for us. It is vital, absolutely vital, that we become personally converted to the doctrines and principles and ordinances of Jesus Christ, that we know of their veracity by the power of the Holy Ghost, understand what that witness leads us to do, strive with all our might to always be found doing that. TRUE conversion to the Restored Gospel will protect us from the many forces that will try to pull us away, and there are many. We must know it deeply, we must know it individually, we must try it out, we must view the results, and recognize their goodness. I know that if we do these things, we will be happy.
     I love you so much!

довиждане!

"Knock, and ye Shall Receive"

Family Mine!

эдревайте! Typing with a non-phonetic Bulgarian keyboard is difficult! In any case, thank you so much for the letters--it is always so wonderful to hear from you and to see your wonderful smiling, beaming faces. I have a beautiful family! In any case, I am doing well here in Bulgaria--I promise I have not been forgetting to zip up my coat! It actually has begun to warm up here (strange), but the weather fluctuates fairly rapidly, so we'll see.
Grandma, thank you so much for the reply--I promise we will do our best to teach them correct English! It is actually fairly enlightening to see their struggles, then realize that is almost certainly what I sound like when I speak Bulgarian. If anything, it keeps me humble--language is such a funny thing. In any case, I love you Grandma--say hello the seminary class for me!
Mom, thanks for the update--I love the way you write, the way I can hear you saying it. Is in ok if I take a little bit of time to think more fully about what scripture I want on my plaque? If not, I would say Ether 12:27, but that is without more consideration. I will ponder on it this week, but if that's the one you need to use, no worries--it's a great one! I love you so much, and am so grateful for the wonderful example that you are and have been in my life. Keep on training--you are going to be running circles around me before long! (Though considering the amount of walking we do, it might be a close run thing). I love you bunches!
Dad...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I knew it was soon, and I was going to ask today when exactly, but here is my answer. I will write my thought about you at the end. In any case, thank you as always for your letters--they always highlight something I need to think about or improve upon. I hope to someday be as trusted by the Lord as you are, to perform the necessary labor that you have done to have his confidence. Also, it sounds like you guys are going to have a blast of a High Adventure this year--jump of the raft a few times for me! I love you so much Dad.
Paige--Selfies while driving? What? Jokes! You look awesome--I am the only boy that is allowed to say that to you, ok? (Besides Ronnie and Dad). Keep being wonderful, keep singing, keep feeling the spirit always. You rock!
Ronnie--way to go on making JV! You will have a blast. As long as you always let it be that (a blast), sports will be a wonderful part of your life. I am sure you are tearing it up. Keep working hard and being wonderful. Sing your brains out, and practice the hymns--it'll take you far when you have a group of people trying to follow you, singing in a language you still struggle to understand. Get them locked down now! It will take you far. I love you so much, study PMG, know that I think the world of you.
Lizzie, nice pants! Are those maroon? I am sure you are on the cutting edge of fashion--the same that I said for Paige goes for you, alright? You are a beautiful, wonderful daughter of God, and he loves you more than either of us know. Keep that in mind! I love you so much.
Alright, my memory of Dad. First off, there are so many that I cannot even begin to count, so know that I could write and write all day, and it wouldn't begin to describe all the wonderful memories I have of you, Father Dearest. The one that comes to mind, however, is nothing less than the all too famous "bummy-axe kick." I will never forget the sight of you coming right for one of us, Ronnie or Lizzie or some little child on you shoulders, grinning like a fool, laughing hysterically. I have nothing but fond memories of wrestling and playing, just being close and feeling each others love. Thank you for never being afraid to be silly with us, for never missing the opportunity to show your children how much you love them. You are a wonderful Father, and a one of a kind man. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Alright, time to explain the title. This week was a great week--we kept Georgi on the way to baptism, and he as almost given smoking and drinking completely, and we had another wonderful investigator fall out of the sky (moved to Shumen recently, and has already been being taught by other missionaries), and we have seen increase in attendance over the last two weeks at Sacrament meeting. The highlight of the week, however, was the awesome Zone Conference we had in Varna. We took a train there, spent the night in a hotel (an interesting experience--I felt like I was back in Choir, but instead of practicing music before going to bed...we were planning our missionary activities. Strange, but good). President Bennet of the area Presidency came, and he was incredibly inspiring. We all walked out of that room with missionary fire burning in our chests, and the desire to see real, incredible, faith-filled growth in our units (groups or branches). Saturday night and through the day Sunday, we were praying to know who we need to find to strengthen the group, and we decided that a strong family would be the perfect fit for our group. As we went out, with this in mind, and faith in our hearts, we saw a man standing, waiting for a bus, so we started talking to him. Pretty soon we had started teaching him by the light of a street lamp on the seats of a dark, cold bus stop--by the end of the lesson, we had discovered he was looking for Christian faith, and...he HAD A FAMILY! He said he couldn't bring his wife to our next lesson, only because she had given birth to their second son that very morning, but that she was a big reader, and would certainly be interested in the pamphlet and the Book of Mormon. We accepted that as a more than viable excuse, and parted ways. What a miracle! The Lord truly, truly does answer our prayers, in miraculous ways.
I love you all so much, obedience brings blessings, this Gospel is true, it teaches us to be happy. You're the greatest!

With Love,
Elder Hardy

Ето; чудеса!

Hello Family Mine!

So wonderful (as usual) to receive your letters! I love it when I look in the box and there are a whole bunch of "Ronald Hardy's"--they are my favorite ones. It sounds like another wonderful week in Spokane.
Mom, just thinking about all that left over roast and mashed potatoes and spare rolls and homemade cookies made me start to salivate a little, as I sit here at the computer. Those lucky teenagers! I am so glad you guys got to have that expereince--here in Bulgaria, a day does not go by when I do not think about how blessed we are as a family. We truly have been given much, and have need to give back. Thank you so much, as always, for the great advice, and the charge to be obedient--it truly is the gateway to power. I love you!
Dad, glad to hear from you, and glad to hear that you are feeling better! Thank you, as always for your wonderful advice and counsel--you always know just what I need to hear (somehow...). And thank you for loving my Mother--you are such a wonderful example of what a Father should be. Just because I'm across the planet doesn't mean I can't say it--if I become half the man you are, I'll be a great guy! I love you.
Paige--that is a great song! I am glad that you are singing it. I thought of you this week--keep being happy, keep being bubbly, and be the leader--you are the oldest! It hit me for the first time this week. I am sure you are a wonderful older sister. I love you so much!
Ronnie, I saw that picture of you guys snowboarding, where you are lying down in front. First thought: DORK! I love it--I wouldn't have it any other way. You are a great guy, and fun to be around--the more I think about it, the more I realize what a blast you are to have around. Keep up the good work, study PMG. I love you so much!
Lizzie--thank you so much for the letter! I love it. I wrote you back your own. I love you!
Alright, questions:
      1) Yes, the group is made up mostly of one family, with one or two other steady features, then other faces that show up when they can--it is WAY different, but in some ways it is great. You certainly get to know each other well! And we have an office-type space that is the bottom floor of a "block" (appartment building). It is small, but it is pretty nice.
      2) We do most of our contacting on Главната улица (litereally " the head" or "the main" street), where there is a lot of foot traffic--we do it wherever we go, but that is usually a good place to find people. It's lined with shops and things, so it attracts people from all over Shumen.
      3) Yes, I have a hat--no worries!
This was the first full week in the country, and it truly was a wonderful week. I got a chance to go on exchanges with Elder Harkness, who is just about on the way out, and it was really an eye-opening experience. His desire to go and go and go was just incredible, and he was a practiced professional at stopping anyone and everyone that had the slightest bit of interest. As we talked, I came to realize that, though he had such proficency in missionary tasks, he was no Bulgarian language wizard, nor did he have some massively large vocabulary (though certainly a LOT larger than mine), but he had done the practice and the work to where the language was no hinderment to his missionary purpose. And it gave him power. One doesn't have to become a "master"of the language to be a powerful missionary--you have to do the work to get to the point where the spirit can do the rest. So cool!
This Sunday was a miracle (thus the title)--we had some incredible experiences this week: from starting to work with Giorgi (we met him on the street, and his life is already turning around) to having a surprise investigator show up to English Class, then come to church...it was incredible. At church, we almost had more non-members than members, and there is some serious promise in these investigators. It has so strongly reinforced my testimony that the Lord is hastening his work--yes, not every Sunday will be as magical as this one, but the Lord is truly calling out to his children, and they are hearing his cry more and more. It is so exciting to be part of this work at this time! Keep up your missionary efforts, family--there is no greater work to be engaged in!
For anyone planning on leaving on a mission, on a misson, or really serving others in ANY capacity, in the church or without, I encourage you to read 1 Thessalonians 1 and 2. The feelings of intense love that we feel for those we serve, especially those we can bring the Gospel is so wonderful, and if we can learn to cultivate the sort of love that Paul had for these people (see chapter 2 especially), we will be able to help them so much more, and will feel so much more joy. There truly is no greater joy than that that comes from helping others to partake in the sweet fruits of the Gospel!
I love you all so much, I love this work, and know that this Gospel is true. This is Jesus Christ's church, the Book of Mormon is the word of God.
I promise to be safe and obedient!

със много любов

Me, with the sunrise...with bad lighting!

Last thing!

I have not been getting Rees and Jordan's letters--recently. Would it be alright if you could forward them to me? I like to see how they are doing. Thanks so much!

I LOVE YOU!

эдрайвайте! What a week!

Family Mine!

Thank you so much for that wonderful wonderful letter--it is so great to hear from you guys again--two weeks feels like a long time! I am sad that the cookies had to get sent home, but I am glad that I made here as well--the more and more I hear about it, the more I realize that it is a blessing that we made it. From what I heard, the church was on the last legs to get our visas--we had backed up the system so much, they were on the verge of permanantly reassigning us (as to give room to the missionaries behind us) when our visas came through. What a blessing it is to be here. Once again, it's the Lord's plan, not ours.
Sounds like you all had quite a wonderful vacation, and had a blast. It has been extremely cold here in Bulgaria as well (below freezing, all day, every day, and windy), which I didn't realize was such a problem until we started working and I realized that we walk everywhere, and are out in it pretty much from 1100 until 2100. I got a nice warm coat in Sofia, and some very warm gloves however, so I am doing great. Don't worry!
Mom, that is a great story--I love the example that you set by saying a prayer of gratitdue AFTER the miracle. Not only does that show the Lord that we recognize His hand in that blessing, but it also makes the experiecne more sweet and memorable for us. I love you lots Mother! (P.S. Whenever I show Bulgarian people family pictures, they think you're my sister because you look so young. They think you are beautiful. I agree!)
Dad, sounds like you're hard at work as always--in Group Gospel Discussions in English (basically, we teach the Gospel in a nonthreatening (ish) way in English for people that want to work on their English) we were talking about Fathers, and how God is our father, and one of the discussion questions was about what our earthly fathers had taught us. Dad, you have taught me a lot of important things. Thank you so much for that. I love you!
Paige! I still have your "Be Happy" cards with me in my pocket--everytime I pull out my planner out of that same pocket, and they fall out, I smile and think of you. You are a beautiful daughter of God!
Ronnie, there is a member family here (well, basically the only member family) who has a whole bunch of sons--you would have a blast with them. They are obsessed with arm-wrestling. I love you, strengthen your testimony now! You're great. Also, have fun in middle school sports--they are a blast!
Lizzie, you are so great--whenever I think about your smile, it gives me a little burst of energy. Keep being wonderful!
If I were to put my expereience here in Bulgaria so far into one word, it would have to be...different. In every way. From the food (a lot of bread and meat--almost nothing has preservatives, so it is VERY fresh all the time) to the style of living (everything is very close-- from the spread of Colorado to the density of Europe) to the work (people just walking on the street actually want to talk about spiritual things!)...it is crazy. I am serving in the city of шумен (shoo-men), and my companion is Elder Kingsly, and he is wonderful. Very fun loving (I promise, despite his demeanor in the picture), and very committed to obedience. Great guy. He wants to be an actor of some sort when he returns, and he acts like it. I love it. He speaks good Bulgarian, which is very helpful (he's been out about 7 months). We don't have a branch here in шумен, just a group, so that is very different as well. Yesterday at church, the number of members attending to number of missionaries attending (4 in the city) were perilously close, but we have a great group leader who is very converted, so we don't have to worry about that aspect of it. We definitely have work to do though. There is a lot more than that, I'm sure, but I just don't know how quite to put it into words. There are so many wonderful things here, and a lot of different ones as well. Exciting!
An experience and a testimony. So here in Bulgaria, as of yet, I have learned that although I have retained a fairly good ability to speak and to teach in Bulgaraian (maybe mediocre or sufficient would be better words), I pretty much cannot understand what anyone is saying back to me. Along with being a little disconcerting, it makes it very difficult to answer people's concerns and questions, because all I can do is shake my head and say "Da, Da" and then look to Elder Kinglsy for a translation. It will come, but right now, it is tough. In any case, we were in a lesson, and it had been going great--we came to the point in the lesson where it was my turn to speak, and I began to speak and testify. After I had finished, I saw the fellow we were teaching begin to respond, and to my alarm and great surprise...I understood what he said! It was a short simple response, it was probably only 3 or 4 words, and it was nothing more than just agreeing with what I had said, but I actually picked out the words that he had used. I was dumbfounded. My testimony is that, without a doubt, the Lord cares for us individually. It was a small tender mercy, but it gave me hope that I WILL be able to keep up with the rapidity of speech one day, that I will be able to communicate with them, that it is not just a distant hope, but an approaching reality. I know that blessing was from the Lord, and with his help, I can become an effective tool to build the Church here in this wonderful country, that when it comes down to it, the reason I came here was not to learn Bulgarian, but to help others to know Christ, to live in his way, and to be eternally happy. The Bulgaraian is simply a side-note to that end. I love this work, I know that the Lord is in it. I love you all as well!
I will be obedient, I will stay safe, I promise Mom.

With all my love,
старейшина Харди
