From Bolivia to Bulgaria to Bohemia to Boise!

Family Mine!

I love you so much! Thank you for the wonderful letter and for the encouragement. It is so great to see pictures of your smiling faces and to hear about your wonderful testimonies. Things are great here in Stara Zagora--the only thing that changed here in Stara Zagora is that Sister Ausen went to Sofia, and that we got a new Sister Jensen in from Ruse--the thing about serving in a smaller Mission is that I know personally every missionary that has served longer or a little bit shorter than I (because we have been in the same District or at least Zone frequently), so there are usually no big surprises. Sister Jensen is a great Мисионерка, and plays the piano wonderfully as well. I haven't actually played in Sacrament since Shumen! Other than that, it's the same old crew. Elder Hazelhofer will have been here for 6 months at the end of the transfer, and Sister Williams for 4 and a half. We have been helping a lot with the Self-Reliance class that the Church is putting out (translating for Sister Whiting, the facilitator, mostly), and it has been neat to see the members getting excited about finding better work, so it has been neat. Other than that, we have been working with one investigator to get married so that he can get baptized, but there always seems to arise another problem when we are right on the brink! It will happen--he has great faith--but it will just take a little bit more time.
I do not know the Beckman's, but I am sure that they are great! Give them a big hello from me!
Mother; thank you for the help with the...work that must not be named. I sure hope that it works out! I love you so much, and am grateful for everything that you do for me. By the way--you are doing great as a parent!
FATHER; Happy Birthday! I don't have the words to explain how much of an influence you have had on my life. I think an experience that I had last week sums it up fairly well though. As a Branch Presidency, we were asked by the Area Presidency to speak in Church, and my topic was about personal and family Goals for personal scripture study, prayer, and Family Home Evening. As I was pondering about what to share, and how to explain my feelings, what was the first thing to pop into my mind but a poem: "on the table, side by side, the Book of Mormon and the T.V. Guide. One is well worn, used with pride, not the Book of Mormon, but the T.V. Guide." It was a little bit garbled translated into Bulgarian, but wonderful nonetheless. Thank you so much, Dad, to live my life right side-up, and not up-side down, to have my priorities right-side out, to be able to walk tall before God. I have countless examples of how to be a good Father, a good Priesthood holder, a good friend and a worthy son of God, simply from watching the way that you live your life. Doctor Bishop, thank you for your example of hard-work, and for loving my Mother. If I could be half the man you are, I will know that I did something right. Happy Birthday!
Paige; thank you for your tender heart! Work hard and ace those finals! I love you Sister.
Ronnie; follow Dad! I love you so much, keep working hard, love you Sisters.
Lizzie; we talk with a lot of English (British) people who have some pretty thick accents. I will think of you when I talk to them. Could you get me a time tuner, Harmonie? It would be a gift to be able to do more than one thing at once as a Missionary! I love you.
This week we had a worldwide Missionary Broadcast (the whole world, watching at the same time!), and it really was spiritually uplifting. One of the things that really stuck to me was about the Role of the Holy Ghost--do we look to "use" the Holy Ghost to help others, or do we realize that it is the other way around--WE are the instrument of the Holy Ghost, and we just have to be willing and humble enough to invite him into our lives, and then just get out of the way. I love the scriptures, and the spirit that they bring. Read them! I love you all so much!

With a Smile,
Elder Hardy

Re: What's your final decision?

My Dear Sweet Organized Mother,

Thank you so much for being so on the ball and pro-active about helping me out with this--I REALLY appreciate it and feel blessed to have you for a Mother! I have thought and prayed about it, and I would REALLY like to be with both Peter and Max, whether we are on campus or not. I would be good either way, but my inclination is be off campus, either in the Elms or the Liberty Square, thought being in the new Heritage would not be a crime either! I talked to Peter, and he expressed an interest in rooming together, and I really would like to be with him as well--he really is a solid, great guy. If you could talk to Peter's Mom about the idea of living off-campus with Max and I, and I will send him another message, inviting him to live with Max and I and his Mission Companion, and asking him what his opinion is about it. It would be ideal for all of us to be able to be together, but if he (Peter) is really really set on living on Campus, I guess I will just have to make a decision which I really don't want to have to make. I feel that I need to be with Peter--I always felt the Spirit when I was around him, but I really am looking forward to building a lasting relationship with Max as well.
Does it need to be decided before next Monday, or can we make the decision that day? If there is something that is pressing, you could probably just send a message to the Mission, they could call me, and I could get on one of the Whiting's computers and shoot back a quick response. Thank you so much for working on this for me!
In terms of classes, whatever you pick, at whatever time, I am sure I will be happy with. I trust you! We can deal with that later though, I guess.

I love you so much, have a great week!

Love,
Elder Hardy

Dear sweet Tanner,

Warning - this e-mail is about post-mission things.  They MUST be discussed and decided NOW.  You have been readmitted to BYU - so you must have completed your ecclesiastical endorsement - which is great.  The only things left to do are figure out your housing (contracts are available starting Feb 1) and registration.

HOUSING:

I received an e-mail this week from Peter's mom about rooming at BYU.  She said Peter is super interested in rooming with you next year - and he is also interested in living on-campus.  I wasn't sure what that meant... did you decide that you would like to live on campus with Peter?  Or should we see if he is interested in living off-campus?

I talked to Sister Alley and she said that Max is only interested in living off campus.  He has a guy from his mission that he wants to share an apartment with.  He also wants to room with you (I'm not sure he knows Peter, but they would get along fine).

SOOO...Do you want to live on campus with Peter (the New Heritage buildings - they have sections for older students) - or off campus with Max, his mission buddy, and maybe Peter (either at Liberty Square or The Elms)?

Please pray about it and then let me know today :)

REGISTRATION:

Let's talk about this later.  I don't think Freshman can register until the summer - and I looked over the "map" for your intended major and it's mostly just the chemistry, biology, math and physics series.  So fun!!!!

I love you, son, and feel like you will be happy and successful no matter where you live next year.  I just want you to feel good about your decision.

Love,
mom

Hello!

Hello!

I am doing email a little earlier today! Sorry! I will write you in a little bit if you still haven't had a chance. I love you!

Elder Hardy

I love you!

Family mine!

I love you so much! I am sorry that I don't have a ton of time to write you this week, but I just want you to know that I love you so much, I am doing great, we got transfer calls and I am staying in Stara Zagora for another 6 weeks with Elder Hazelhofer (yea!), and that this week there were many miracles!
We saw many miracles--it seemed as if the Lord was making a special effort this week to not only to give us little tender mercies (which he surely always does), but to help to recognize them as well. For example, last night we were running late for an appointment, and our investigator family (who we found by a miracle as well!) was not picking up their phone, which worried us even more. When we arrived at their apartment, the entrance was dark, and no one answered to any of the doorbells. We started doubting that we were even at the right entrance, so we decided to retrace our steps of a few nights ago, when the daughter of this family had found us (unsuccessfully) trying to visit a less-active, and had brought us to her house to have a lesson with her family. As we got up to the less-active's entrance to start re-tracing our steps, we decided to ring her doorbell again ("Why not? She has never answered before!"). To our great surprise and joy, she answered the ringer, opened the door, and invited us in! We couldn't stay because her husband was not there, but we set up an appointment to go and visit her, and we were able to sing her a song as well, and she really seemed to enjoy it. I know that Heavenly Father led us to be at the right time at the right place so that we could open her heart a little bit more to the blessings of the Gospel. I have been trying to work on writing in my journal better, so to not loose these precious signs of love from Heavenly Father!
Mother; I love you so much--you do a great job about being excited, so don't worry so much about it--you did well enough to get me excited about the Gospel!
Father; expect big things in 7 days....Old Man! I love you!
Paige, Ronnie, Lizzie; I love you so much, have a great week, and just know that you are Children of God, and of great Earthly parents as well! I love you.
I know that the Book of Mormon is true, it truly has blessed my life in so many ways. Read it!

I love you all so much, Have a great week!

Family Counts!

Dear Family Mine,

Wow, I laughed and smiled so much reading this letter, I couldn't get a hold of myself! Thank you so much for your wonderful happy spirits and wonderful examples. I really cannot express how grateful I am to be able to open up my Email every week and truly be lifted up by your words and pictures and smiles and testimonies. God truly has been so kind to me, I cannot express how grateful I feel. It just envelops my whole being, from toes to nose and even higher! I love you so much.I am glad that you got my letter--I was starting to get scared that it got lost in the mail. I am glad that you like it, and hope you will smile at the corniness and feel of the sincerity. I told Rees's story about the Chinese to my companion, and they got a good laugh about it--I have definitely felt that feeling as well;when we walk past people who are talking to each other in other languages (especially Turkish), my heart skips a beat and I seem to flash back to those first few weeks being in Bulgaria, the feeling of seeing someone earnestly trying to communicate with you, and you not having the FAINTEST clue what they are trying to say to you. It really is a panic-inducing feeling! Thanks for that story.
This week we had a really neat opportunity to travel to a nearby village to teach the family of a Bulgarian man who joined the church while he was alone, working in Austia. He came back and made contact with us, and we went out with the Whitings to teach them about the Restoration. During the lesson, his wife and son committed to read the Book of Mormon every day (which they have been doing as a family!), and to be baptized as well. It was such a treat to see how excited and anxious the husband was to teach his wife--he practically was jumping out of his chair every other sentence, trying to make sure that she understood. It truly made me think--in every teaching environment, am I as excited as he was? Do I realize that when I am teaching anyone, I need to teach them as if it were my blood Brother or Sister were hearing it for the first time in their life? It was a great lesson, and a great miracle.
Mother; (snazzy robot!), it really is true about the handwriting thing. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I actually saved the Customs slip from the first package you sent, partially for a keepsake, but also because your handwriting is just so...familiar? Nostalgic? I am not sure. I still remember how, whenever you and Dad would go on a trip or even just out on a date, you would hide in our drawers and beds and everywhere, little construction paper hearts with little messages on them. It was great fun to search for them after you left the house, and truly always helped me to feel your love. Thanks for being a great Mother! Also, that is crazy about Audrey! Tell her that I have met a lot of Armenian people here (especially in Varna), and they are really wonderful people, with very strong faith. She'll do great! Also, thank you for getting things lined up about housing--one less thing to worry about. I love you so much Mother!
Father; Thanks for the pictures! I am glad that you had a chance to go out and to see the Yukls--give them my love and my support. Elder Hazelhofer has been training me how to be a Branch Clerk, and it has been a great experience in learning about how the Church functions, and how serious a responsibility it is to be a Bishop or Branch President. Those are things you just don't quite pick up on as the Priest's Quorm First Assistant! I love you Dad, and am grateful for your faithful service.
Paige; I love you little Sister! In the shower this morning I was singing a Christmas Hymn that we sang in Jazz Choir the year before you got in, but it still made me think of you. I love you so much!
Ronnie; you look very як (it is said like "Yak," the furry-horned-jumping goat thing) as they would say in Bulgarian. Go tell your friends, and they will either be really impressed by how multi-cultural you are, or will think that you have developed a sudden desire love of animals. I love you so much, have a great week, read PMG!
Lizzie; you are so beautiful! I am glad that you get to be around Paige and Ronnie--I hope that you spend every minute you can becoming as close as you can with them! I have learned as a missionary that no relationship progresses without attention being given to it, without some effort being put in. I know you already are very close, and for that I am grateful. I love you so much!
Hearing about Max entering the last 6 months of his mission frightens me, but it also has driven me to reflect a little bit more this week about who and what I have become during my mission, and what I need to do to keep moving forward. Time really jumps ahead with leaps and bounds, but I know that in reality, it moves with the same pace, that a day is still 24 hours, 8 hours sleep, 16 hours to give everything that I have to the Lord. Our time to serve as Missionaries (and as servants of the Lord here on the Earth, really) is so minuscule when compared with the rest of Eternity, there is no reason to be "weary in well doing," for our service is like a sprint! I am so grateful for the scriptures and the guidance that they give us. May we all use every chance that we receive to serve someone around us well, and may we seek them out ever more frequently. I love you all so much!

With Love,
Elder Hardy

I hope that Google Translate does you well.In any case, I am doing great, and life is good here in the Old City. Just in case I spelled a few things wrong up there, we have a ton on snow! It snowed all day yesterday (which didn't drive as many people away from Church as we thought it would luckily), and now we have about 3-4 inches of fresh, powdery snow. Just in time for preparation day! I will send you some pictures. We went with the Bulgarian 1st councilor in the Branch Presidency, Anton (he is so great!) before he went to work (all before 8:00) and had some fun in the snow. Apparently it very rarely snows here at all, so people were pretty unprepared--we spent about an hour or so this morning (just on the way from the Church to the Whitings apartment helping people to clean off in front of their stores--most people were using brooms, because they didn't have a shovel! It was fun, wet and quite cold, but well worth it.
These last few days we had a chance to teach one of our investigators, and he is looking really good for baptism this month--what a blessing! He is a great man, with great faith. Please pray that he will be able to meet with us enough before his date on the 16th, and that there will not be any unexpected complications. We are excited for him!
Mother; tell Rees that I frequently pray for his to go on a date. It will happen! I love him. Not traveling as much really is nice--it allows you to really feel as if you get into a rhythm. It is also nice to just focus on the needs of the District, with whom I have a chance to interact with on a daily basis. It is fun. If there is anything I learned while being a Zone Leader, it is how to be a good District Leader! Funny how that works. On the downside, I don't get to work with as many missionaries, but it is still great. Also, I have been talking with Max about housing for when we come back, and he said that there are a few places right on the border of campus where a lot of 20-21 year old Returned Missionaries go, I believe Liberty Square was one of the places that he mentioned. I am thinking that one of those type of places might be good. I am not sure because I have never been down there of course as a Student, but living on Campus as a Returned Missionary might be a little bit...I don't know. There is still time, but just some thoughts. Maybe you could talk to Sister Alley about it, or something like that? I am not sure. Thank you so much! I love the Book of Mormon as well--it truly is a catalyst for good missionary work, because the whole Restoration can truly be determined true or false by a test of it's veracity. I love that book! Tell Jordan and Hailey that the second time is better! I love you so much.
Father; I do know Elder Packard! I actually have been on exchanges with him while I was a Zone Leader. Just the other day I was talking to him about it. Isn't it a small small world that we live in? Crazy. I love you so much Father, thank you for your great example!
Paige; I love you so much! Your hair looks good long! Make sure that you drive safe in the snow. Love you!
Ronnie; nice goggles! I am counting on you to convert Hailey and Jordan to the better side of the Snow-Sports experience. Remember the example of Moroni; he did not judge it wrong to use tactics, for his cause was just. Same principle applies here. I love you so much little brother!
Lizzie, I love how you are always up front in the pictures, with an ear to ear grin. I love that so much about you. You are wonderful!
I love what it says in Moses chapter 7:18 about the people of Zion--they were of "one heart and of one mind." Unity truly is the key to success in so many phases of our lives. To me, unity is driven by having the same goals, the same purposes, and letting that bring us together to accomplish greater things than we could have just by ourselves. If we as a Family have the same goals, have the same desires, and constantly remember them, then we will be united, and we will be happy. If we then take those goals and plans before the Lord in sincere prayer, he will show us what HIS plans and goals for us are, and as we strive towards these goals together as a family, we WILL be happy. May we strive to be of one heart and one mind first with our Father in Heaven, then with each other. It will bring joy and true, lasting peace, of that I am certain. I love you so much, have a great week!

With love,
Elder Hardy

Dear Family Mine,

Wow! It was such a blessing to be able to see your beautiful faces the other day--I really have a wonderful family! I am grateful that I got to see Dad, and also that Grandpa was there. We work very closely with the Whitings here in Stara Zagora, and every time that I translate for an interview for President Whiting, I can't help but thinking of Grandpa, extending callings without a translator or anything! I really am grateful for the example of ALL my Grandparents in serving the Lord, in giving of their time back to him. What a blessing it is to serve!
This time of year, from Christmas Eve until two days after New Years (two days, because everyone is nursing a hangover today) are called "The Holidays," and most people have some time off from work, family comes home or people go and visit family, and in general is an interesting time to be a Missionary, but really really wonderful. On Christmas Eve this year, it was just a normal work day, and we really saw some great blessings! We set up an appointment with an...interesting man that we had met about a week before, but we finally got to the appointment, we realized that he wasn't exactly who we were looking for; after 20 minutes trying to get him to sit down and talk, and then 20 more minutes of trying to get hiM to let us walk away, he told us that the last thing he wanted to do was to introduce us to his friend, who had apparently lived in the States for a while, who sold organic water. Despite the pessimistic voice in my head telling me that if this man's friends were anything like himself, we were going to loose another 20 minutes extracting ourselves, we went with him. He brought us to a little back-water shop, and introduced us to his friend. To make a long story short, he was prepared, we taught him a lesson, and set up a return appointment. Without listening to that little voice, just peeping out from behind the pessimism, we would never have found him. It was a little sign of love from a very aware Father in heaven. Christmas Day was great (thank you so much for the great ties and treats!). On New Year's Eve, we had to be in early to avoid the drunks, but we had a dandy old time cleaning the appartment (and pulling out all the things--thanks Dad!). A great Christmas season.
Mother; it was so great to see you! Does it feel weird to have so many teenage children? I am so grateful for all that you do for me, and for the Family. I am plenty warm, I promise!
Father, that was my best Christmas gift, just to hear about the cleaning of the garage! I really am grateful for the things that you have always taught us about doing a job correctly, Father. It is really something that I will always be grateful for. I am also grateful for what you always have taught us about service, and that you got to be on the receiving end for once! I love you with all of my heart!
Paige; I wrote you, I love you!
Ronnie; I love you little Brother! I am glad to see that you still participate in the Nativity Fun! Those family traditions that we have are really a treasure. but they only work if the people that participate are willing! Keep smiling, take care of Paige and Lizzie for me!
Lizzie; thanks for the note! I love you!
I have been thinking a lot about repentance lately, especially with the New Year, as we begin thinking of Resolutions and such. Repentance is more than just a change of behavior, it is a change of how we view ourselves, the world, and our Heavenly Father. True repentance is not just a change of behavior, but a change of our guiding principles, the little rules by which we live our life, to bring them in harmony with the principles of the Gospel. Instead of examining our behavior, may we examine the principles by which we live first, because from there stems our behavior. I love you all so much, Честита нова Година, много ви обичам, и ви пожелавам здраве и щастие през цялата година!

with love,
Elder Hardy

Merry Christmas!

The District!

Dear Elder Hardy,

Merry christmas! It was great to see you! How was your christmas in Bulgaria? Our christmas was great this year. We slept in until 9:20! Dad loved our gift of cleaning the garage so much he cried! It was great! We got great gifts and were very thankful! I love you!

                                       Love,
                                           Lizzie

Lizzie!

Thanks for the letter! You look so grown-up, it is crazy. I am glad that you got to help Dad--he really is great, isn't he? I love you so much, keep smiling, and make sure to give Ronnie a big hug for me. My Christmas was really great. I love you so much!

Elder Hardy

Hey T-man! How goes it?
It was so awesome to talk to you and see your face. I don't want to tell you I miss you so I'll just whisper it. [**I miss you a lot tanner, a lot a lot.**] We had a teenager christmas this year, we didn't even wake up until 9:30! I got a gorgeous canon rebel dslr camera. I love it!!! Mom told me to read the instructions and I have learned how wise it is. It's not really my thing, but now I know how to use the camera which is nice... We also made dad cry. Jordan noticed that dad was disgusted that his garage was so dirty, so Christmas day, while dad was at work, we took a couple hours to organize, move junk and wood, and sweep. Dad said it was the greatest gift he'd ever received. In the past cleaning the garage day has been the longest, filthiest, and worst day ever; this time was different. It felt like we were only out there 1 hour instead 4 and for some reason, it didn't even feel like work. Those are my favorite gifts given and received this year. How do they celebrate christmas in Bulgaria? Is it the same, do they do Christmas trees? How was your Christmas day?
(I don't know if mom told you but I am doing online seminary this year. I love it! It is a lot easier for me because I don't have to wake up so early and I feel as if I am learning more than I did in early morning. The individual setting and feeling of it fit my personality and learning style a lot better. But recently I am having a hard time being fully invested in my study and I find myself just racing through the lesson. Do you have any advise on how to make focusing on seminary more important than the things the worldly part of my mind thinks is more important?)

       -Paige

Pa-ha-ige,

I love you so much! I told my companion about your instructions experience, and he got a good laugh (a friendly, warm one, not a derisive one, I promise!). Maybe I am just a missionary, but there is a Gospel analogy in there; keeping the commandments or reading the scriptures may not "be our thing," but it sure is nice at the end! I love you so much. Take some really good pictures for me--with a camera that good, it will be like I am right there in the setting! I love you little Sister.
I am so glad to hear about the experience with the Garage--it is true that when the Holy Spirit is felt, there is "a feeling that every person in the room would be anywhere else in the World at that time"--that is the feeling with service as well. Time flies! Give Dad a big hug and tell him that I love him!
That really is a very fundamental question that every person must find an answer to; how do we "overcome the natural man," in ourselves, that tendency to want to do the worldly thing, to seek the Kingdom of God second or third, instead of seeking it first. First, it is hard for everyone, so don't feel too bad about it. For me, motivation comes from two things: looking forward with an eye of Faith, expecting and seeking the best results, and two, the confirming witness of the Spirit. When it comes to all things (and especially Spiritual things), we have to look past the here and now, and see what our actions will bring us in the long run. Ask yourself: "What are the long-term benefits of focusing on this class right now, instead of whatever else I could be doing?". I promise you that the more you focus on Seminay, the more spiritual power you will have as a missionary or a Mother or a teacher or whatever you become! This year is really one of the greatest chances to get the WHOLE backstory of the scriptures, a basis that will bless you for the rest of your studying and teaching and helping for years to come. Almost EVERYDAY I use things that I remember from seminary, (and sometimes I wish I payed a little better attention!). As you look forward to that result, and act, the spirit will witness to you, that what you are doing is right, and you will have the strength to go on, because of that confirmation of the Spirit. And you will find more long-lasting happiness, I promise, than any worldly thing that could draw your attention.
Also, giving yourself questions before you start studying always makes the study more engaging, and more applicable in the moment. I need to be better about that too!
Hope that helped, I love you so much!
