Seven Days, Already?

Dear Family Mine,

Thank you for the wonderful letter! It is always so wonderful to hear the happenings in the hilarious and happy Hardy Home. It sounds like summer is in full swing. I am glad to see you all having so much fun, learning and growing. Радвайте се, братя и сестри! This week has been extremely busy and more than a little tiring, but just wonderful, absolutely wonderful. On Monday, I had the opportunity to spend some time with Elder Slinker (I felt like I was back in Shumen!), and then Elder Howard came in, and we got to work--on Wednesday we had the opportunity to go down to Pleven, and I gave my first Baptismal Interview. It was a neat experience to feel the spirit confirm to me that he was ready to be baptized--it was a good reminder that even though we may not be perfect, have all the knowledge in the world, or always know exactly what to say, the Lord knows our hearts, and he knows those who are ready and willing to take that covenant upon themselves. I was so excited that he passed, I completely forgot to fill out the Baptismal Record with him, which led to some interesting last minute scrambling and document-signing as we were trying to run to catch a train, but it all worked out in the end. All is well that ends well, right? Other than that, Elder Howard and I have been seeing some incredible blessings in our work this week--new investigators have been coming out of no-where (one man walked into church out of the blue, stayed all three hours, and then stayed for a lesson afterwards!), and we are really excited to work with these neat people. As always, there is more work to do than we have time to do it, and I feel like I forget things at every turn, but I know that as we listen to the Spirit, the Lord will remind us of the things that we need to accomplish.
Mother; Jam! Those are some great memories. Eat a lot for me! I absolutely agree about Girls Camp--even if it is just one experience, it is always 100% worth it, even if it is just one spiritual experience. That is a missionary feeling as well! There was a man from Utah in Church two weeks ago, but I am pretty sure he was not Brother Vermillion--this man works with software--but I will have to keep an eye out. In terms of a box, Cliff Bars would be wonderful--there is actually some pretty good oatmeal here, but one that I could use is some more hair wax (paste? The putty-sort of stuff)--they don't really have that here (at least for a reasonable price). All in all however, letters are the best of all--it is so great to see your handwriting! Whatever you send, I promise I will be more than happy. Thank you so much! I love you, and look up to you!
Father--Both of your councilors are so tall! I love how you all are wearing checkered shirts. Thank you so much for the great letter. It really is true that we must be more than certain in the promises of the Lord, in His commandments. That is one thing that I have learned here as a missionary--the Lord truly is BOUND when you do what He says, he can and will bless us when we put Faith in Him first. A life-long principle. Thank you for all you do, I love you!
Rees--Bummer deal! That is no fun. Maybe flipping-patties isn't a skill the Lord wants you to adjust to--that is a good sign! I love you so much Brother.
Paige; congratulations! Working is a rewarding endeavor. I love you so much, and I love thinking about how you blessed the lives of those girls that you worked with. Keep looking to bless those around you, and you will certainly find yourself. I love you, you are beautiful!
Ronnie; what a neat opportunity! Sharing the Gospel is the most rewarding thing that I have done, and it truly is one of the best ways to make deeper that which we already treasure, to enlarge and expand our understanding and testimony. Neat things! I love you little Brother, keep it up!
Lizzie; a master swimmer as well? I should have guessed! I love you so much little sister--it is a little frightening to look at those pictures and see how much you are growing up. Keep being so wonderful!
This week we had a really neat experience--Elder Howard and I were with a member of the Church here (a younger man), and we ended up going tracting with this young man when our lesson didn't work out. He is a recent-convert, and is considering going on a mission, so when we started, and no-one was giving us the time of day, I started praying that this would not be this young-man's impression of missionary work--annoyed faces and slammed doors, but that someone would let us in to share the Restoration with them. We kept knocking; nothing. Finally, at the last door, at the end of the night, we knocked on a big, gray door. We waited, we waited...then all of a sudden the door flew open and an older woman quickly invited us in to her humble abode, asking questions faster than we could answer them. She was old, but a former physics teacher, and still sharp as a whip. We shared the Restoration with her, and she said that she would read the Book of Mormon.  It was such a clear answer to my prayer, I absolutely cannot deny it, and never will be able to. As we walked away, my heart was full of gratitude that that young man was able to witness the beauty of missionary work with us that night. The Lord knows us, he knows what we need.
I love you all so much, have a great week!

The Gospel: A Family Affair (I Love you Dad!)

Wonderful Family Mine!
Здраве! Лятото идва, с сила! Вие всички изглеждате много красиви и прикрасни. Thank you so much for the wonderful letter--it sounds like another busy and wonderful week. Summer! Enjoy it, be together, have some fun. I love you all so much. This week was good, and busy--we had Zone Training on Tuesday (with President and Sister Wilstead for the last time!), a new senior couple came to Sofia, and transfers are happening tomorrow. What a busy time! Both Elder Magoffin and I will be staying in Sofia, but Elder Magoffin will now be serving as an Assistant to the President, so I will be serving with Elder Howard--he is a genuine Idaho boy who loves to sing and to work hard, so we are excited to serve together. I will miss Elder Magoffin as a companion, but we will still have the opportunity to serve closely together, so it will be good. We have had some good meetings with some exciting new investigators this week, the weather is nice (if a little rainy from time to time), and we had a great activity this weekend--there truly is nothing better that I have experienced besides being a missionary. Change? Yes. Discomfort? Certainly! Rejection and disappointment? Of course. Everyday is different, but every day is wonderful (if we let it be that way). I love you so much!
Mother, thank you for that great reminder--we truly should be excited about having the spirit. It always will take a little effort, but it will always be worth it. Prayer, scripture study, church attendance. That is how we stay on the path, that is how we progress! Questions: We contact on buses whenever we get on them to go places--if it is raining, there usually are not people out on the streets, so we either tract, or get on the buses or the Tramvais or the Metro. We do tract whenever we have the chance--during the evening it is usually better than being on the streets. I will not have to update my Visa until January, and that should be the last time I need to deal with it--there is a lot of work in the beginning, but once you have your identification card, everything calms down. I have sung twice in Church here in Sofia, but we do not have a Branch Choir. I am doing good in terms of supplies...not that I would say no to a box however! I will leave it in your hands. There are LOTS of places to buy suits here in Sofia, but I haven't got around to it. It sort of feels strange to be in a Mall as a missionary. I feel like I should be stopping people, but it probably isn't legal. Thank you for your love and support--I feel your love from here!
Father; HAPPY FATHERS DAY! There are so many things that I could say, too many to say in just one short email, and I feel like I have said so many of them before, but I will say them again because they are true. A fun memory first however: I will always remember you for your grip--I remember when we would wrestle when we were little, and I was absolutely convinced that your grip could bend steel, that no matter what anyone did, there was no way ANYONE could force you to let go of something. I was convinced! Thank you so much for who you are, for the example you set for me. Thank you for teaching us to do our best to be diligent--there really is NO replacement for hard work. Thank you for loving my Mother, thank you for always being kind. I hope one day to become half the man, and half the Father that you are. I love you Father!
Grandma and Grandpa: welcome to Europe! I hope you have a great time on your trip, and say hello to Elise for me. I love you so much!
Paige; Jazz Choir Retreat...have a great time! Always remember who you are, and have a great time. Sing some great chords for me! I love you so much--remember who you are!
Ronnie; Scout Camp! Make sure and hike Cardiac Hill for me! I love you so much little brother--try and remember those things you learn as a Scout. They will come in handy as a missionary and in life. I love you so much little brother.
Lizzie; I love you so much! Have a great summer, and make sure and be safe. Swimming lessons will be great--it truly is a good skill to have. I love you!
This week we finally pinned down a time to go and teach a Family that have come to church for the last two weeks, but are not members (sort of...)--the Father was baptized a long time ago, but though a series of events, his records are nowhere to be found, and thus we are teaching him and his wife and their two little daughters the Gospel, and they are excited to be baptized and become members of the church. It was such a sweet blessing to sit in their living room, and discuss the Restoration of the Gospel, and why that would be important for them forever, how it will be the foundation of their family from here on forward. I am so grateful that we have a Loving Heavenly Father, that he cares for us with more love than the best of any earthly fathers. I am so grateful for the simple truths we know about him, and about what his Son has done for us. He is there. He wants to talk to us. That I know, without a doubt, without a hesitation.
I love you all so much, have a great week!
With Love,
Elder Hardy

"Blessed are the Meek"

My Dearest Most Wonderful Family,
Thank you for the wonderful letter. You all look so good--I love you all so much! It looks like the weather is nice and warm--that is the way it is here as well. Sweaty! Life is great however. The week was a good one; ups and downs, always, but still wonderful. We taught some great lessons and learned some great lessons, so everything is normal (всичко нормално, as the Bulgarians would say). We learned that our dear friend is probably not going to be able to be baptized on the 20th, which was tough, but we are still pushing in forward in faith. The Lord gives us standards for our benefit, even if we don't understand them in the moment. Our work is to develop the faith to live them, then to recognize the blessing. His time will come, hopefully sooner than later! More experiences from this week later.
Mother; it is mission-wide policy to not eat dinner with the members, but from time to time members will leave food in the Church kitchen for the missionaries. We do fine however--Elder Magoffin is a fairly inventive cook, though we don't really have much time to cook. It works out. It sounds like the Soccer season was a good one--I love that quote--it really isn't what is on the outside that counts! It is so true that we are never born goats--of all the things that I have been coming to learn, it is that every person has that light of Christ within them, no matter who they are, or how they may appear. We can all change, we can all follow Christ. How blessed we are to have been given a chance to learn of God's plan for us now, while we are on this Earth. What a precious gift!
Father, thank you for the pictures and the note--I love the image of you sneaking away from the Hospital for a few moments to run down to Red Robin. You truly are a wonderful Father. Thank you for your example to me, I love you so much.
      Rees; Shave. Love you!
Paige; way to go, four-point-oh! I am so proud of you, little sister. Just thinking of you driving to the Hospital all by yourself and parking and working with those Medical Files...crazy! You are a beautiful daughter of God, keep choosing the right, I love you so much!
Ronnie, you are one sharp-dressed individual! I love you little brother. Keep loving your little sister (and all your sisters for that matter), and take care of them. Family truly is the most important, it is God's chosen method for us to learn how to become like Him, to perfect ourselves, and to be happy. Keep being wonderful!
Lizzie, you are adorable. Period. Let that shining smile be a reason for people to ask you who you are, and why you are that happy. In Bulgarian, you are лъчизарна (luh-chi-zar-na), which means radiant, or beaming. I love you so much!
The importance of meekness and humility has really stuck out to me this week. As a missionary, life is pretty much just one big humbling experience (in the best way), but it really stood out to me in our interaction with a neat woman that we met this week. Her whole life, she had been searching for who God is, for what the purpose of life is, for where we came from and where we are going. She read the Bible, she looked in other places, and finally she felt that she received her answer that Eastern Philosophy, especially Yoga, was the truth.  As we sat and talked with her about the Plan of Salvation, and she brought up her wonderful and well thought out questions, the spirit was felt, and we began to explain to her how she could only know if those things that we taught were true through prayer, and through the confirmation of the Holy Ghost. After a few seconds silence, she looked at as, and said something along the lines of "I have been asking that question for years, and I already felt that I received my answer. You are saying that I should ask again?". She has a desire to know what is the truth from God, so she said she would ask again, but it really struck me how key a role meekness plays in our conversion--The Lord is always willing to reveal to us the truth, as long as we are willing to make the room in ourselves, to be open to Him. I am so grateful for the witness of the Spirit that has confirmed to me that this Church is true, that this is His Gospel, and that here I will find the most happiness. I may not understand everything, but that I DO know, and will never be able to deny it.
I love you all so much! Have a great week!
With a smile,
Elder Hardy

Faith brings the Miracle, и не обратното!

Dearest Family,

Thank you, as always, for the wonderful, wonderful letters! This week was a great, wonderful, marvelous week. On Tuesday we had Mission Council, which was an incredible experience. There is so much prayer, discussion, council and study that goes into the training presented at Zone Conferences and Zone Trainings--I felt a little out of my leauge, but it was still a great experience. On top of that, Elder Magoffin and I had a chance to work with President Wilstead this week, and also do interviews. I am so grateful for an inspired Mission President who holds the priesthood keys, and is truly called to lead the work here in Bulgaria. He gave me some great coucil. I truly love him. Also this week one of our investigators commited to be baptized on the 20th of June, so we are incredibly excited--he is a wonderful, humble, hard-working man, with a true desire to follow Christ. He works from 5:15 to 7:30, 7 days a week (he owns a little store near the Church building), but he still finds the time somehow to make it to Church, and to meet with us (we meet in his store). We love him dearly, and are so excited for him. This Chruch is the true Church of Christ! This week has been anything but a regular one, but I will do my best to give you a "blow-by-blow" a little later.
Mother: Elder Nelson does not speak Bulgarian, but some Russian I believe. It truly was a wonderful experience--yesterday during fast and testimony meeting, it was a huge blessing to hear all of the members bear testimony of the different things that they learned from his visit. I love these members--they are so wonderful. It sounds like the Garden is really taking off! Cherries are in season here right now, and they are everywhere, for very cheap. This is really a beautiful earth that we live on. I love you Mother, thank you for who you are.
Father, thank you for your letter! I love Elder Bednar's talk "Pray Always," where he talks about just that very thing--how we can make our prayers to be better missionaries truly prayers of faith, and not just well-intended but unfounded hope. He is truly a great speaker. When I think of you kneeling in prayer as a family, it brings me such great joy and peace--thank you, thank you. Thank you for teaching us to pray, thank you for teaching us to read the scriptures. The Spirit is the only true and unchanging guide in our life--we just have to do our part to have him with us. I love you, Father!
Rees, in Bulgarian, you officially are a стройтел! Good work. I love you!
Paige, don't worry to much--as long as you feel that you are progressing, that you are developing those skills in the ways that are the most appropriate for you, you are doing the right thing. Pray about it, ask for conformation, ask for direction, and I know that you will feel our Loving Father's hand. He even cares about little things like that, little sister. You are beautiful (no jokes!), and I love you bunches!
Ronnie, don't feel down on yourself--you always have next year! I love you, read Preach My Gospel, and the scriptures. This week we were talking to a guy on the street, and he said that he worked at a skate shop, so I told the story about you breaking your arm on a long-board--he said it happens a lot even here in Bulgaria. Rejoice--you are part of an international club! I love you, have a great week.
Lizzie, you look so grown up, I nearly had a heart attack. You are a beautiful daughter of God. Keep singing, keep being wonderful, and always remember who you are. I love you so much, have a great week!
Alright, a blow-by-blow. Every day is usually pretty different, but there are usually some common themes. We wake up, and either go out right away, or (if we have too many appointments), get ready for the day. I usually eat cornflakes. Wherever we go, we talk to as many people we can on the street, on the bus, or on the Metro--for that reason we usually plan extra time to travel places. Often times we end up missing our stop on the bus, or our station on the Metro because we are talking to someone, which makes travel even longer, but it is wonderful. Becuase the weather is so nice, lots of people are out in the parks, and love to meet outside, so if we set up a lesson with someone, it usually is outside on a park bench at this time of year. In general, people are pretty loose about their schedules here, so we usually some time waiting for appointments that don't show up, but we make do. All in all, it is usually run to appointment (talking to everyone), try to meet with someone, run to another appointment, run home to grab a very fast lunch and call potential investigators, run to a lesson...lots of running around. I love it, I love it, I love it. Don't know if that helped, but I don't really have anymore time!
I love you all so much, I know that this Gospel is true!

With love,

Elder Hardy

"You're Living IN the miracle!"

My dearest Family,
Wow, what a crazy, good week! It still is strange to me to think about Rees being home. He looks great, and it sounds like you have been keeping him pretty busy, so that is good to hear. Let him know that I love him! This week has been a pretty special one--we had the amazing opportunity this weekend to have Elder Russel M. Nelson of the Quorm of the 12 visit our mission, in correlation with the 25th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Country of Bulgaria for the preaching of the Gospel (which Elder Nelson did, 25 years ago). For that, there was a big conference in Sofia, to which all of the Members of the Church from all parts of Bulgaria were invited to come to Sofia to hear him speak. It was an incredible blessing to see an Apostle of the Lord, and to hear his voice and council. But more on that later. All in all, it was a great week. The weather has been great (warm, but with a few days of rain to cool it down), and the work goes ahead. We didn't do any exchanges this week due to the Conference, but all the missionaries in the whole mission were in Sofia on Friday and Saturday, so it was neat to see them all.
Mother; I am good on short-sleeved shirts (we packed well!), and everything is in order in that respect. It sounds like things have been busy as usual. Thank you for always teaching us to be organized, dearest Mother. It is a blessing in my life nearly every day--I can only aspire to be as organized as you one day. I love you so much.
Father, did you ever think the day would come that you would sit and listen to one of your sons report to the High Council? I hope it doesn't make you feel too old. Elder Nelson was accompanied by one of the Quorum of the 70, Elder Randal K. Bennet--he reminded me of you, except that all of his hair is still dark! Thank you for being such a good Father--this week we had the opportunity to meet briefly with a woman in the branch who moved here from the Philippines a year or two ago, and is a member of the Church, but whose husband is just now allowing her to come to church meetings, and to have people over to visit her. Thank you for always supporting my Mother in everything she does, and in being an example of righteous living. I love you!
Paige, you look as though you play the role of the step-sister with...gusto! Pink suits you well. I hope you have enjoyed humanities this year--it has been strange but neat to actually meet people who live and practice those very world religions that we studied. You look great, know that I am proud of you--stick it out to the finish! I love you.
Ronnie--are you taller than your oldest brother? That is strange but wonderful. You look pretty great as a tree as well. Keep it up, keep being a good example to those around you. Have you had any opportunities to share the Gospel recently? If so, please, let me know about them. I love you!
Lizzie, it looks like you have a good group of friends there! Keep being good, know that I love you so much. Truth.
The Conference with Elder Nelson was wonderful and incredible for many reasons, but of all the advice and council that he gave, one sentence that he said has stuck with me, and has sort of changed my attitude about our work here in some ways. We were doing a question and answer session during the meeting that Elder Nelson had with just the missionaries, and a question was asked, something to the effect of how can we balance between expecting miracles in our work, and not getting our hopes so high to be dashed. Elder Nelson paused for a second, then replied, something to the effect of, "You don't realize it, but you are living IN the miracle! They are happening, it is just a matter of whether you see them or not!". Throughout the next day, as he told about his experiences in first coming to Bulgaria and other areas of Eastern Europe, trying somehow to get missionaries into the countries, and trying to get the Church to be recognized, it really struck me how he must see us--we see ourselves as 60-odd pretty clueless young adults trying desperately to tell people about the most important thing in our lives. He sees a massive miracle, years and years in the making. How often do we get caught up looking for the next thing for us in this life, wallowing in what we aren't, what we can't do, what we haven't accomplished, without realizing the miracle around us. It was a great lesson.
I love you all so much, I will try to put more details into my next letter. I know that this Gospel is true, and that he Book of Mormon is the word of God, that if we come unto Christ, we WILL be happier, we will be more free, we will be a changed people (for the better). Have a great week!
With love,
(The only) Elder Hardy
